In her fine reference book ‘Mysticism’, Anglican Evelyn Underhill regarded John Ruysbroeck as one of the greatest, if not the greatest mystic of them all because of how he applied his mystical, spiritual insights into his practical, everyday Christian life. For most of his life, Ruysbroeck was no hermit or recluse and neither was he a mere detached philosopher or theologian – rather he was fully engaged in day to day church life and pastoral duties.
